NYFW | Alexander Wang SS14
For Spring/Summer 2014, Alexander Wang presented the prettiest mean girls in sexy schoolgirl dresses and boxers and unbuttoned button-downs. Nineties Lolitas that listen to raunchy rap music and gush over fashion magazines in logo t-shirts and baggy pants. These, in essence, are the original “Wang Girls”. Girls that appreciate how Wang counterbalances the in-your-face aspect of his humor and “street” references with couture cuts and luxe leathers. After successfully proving his couture abilities at Balenciaga, Alexander Wang’s celebration of the fashion of the 90’s at his namesake label was his attempt at snatching his street cred back after a very hoighty-toighty last couple of months. This collection should be considered the metaphoric “loosening” of Alexander Wang’s tie after the Parisian black-tie event that is the house of Balenciaga. It’s been an amazing couple of years for the designer and this collection just goes to prove that he hasn’t lost his grip on the concept of smart, frivolous, downtown fun.
